What to Expect when I'm Expecting You

The diary of a newborn and baby photographer is a complicated place! Unfortunately your baby doesn't always get the memo that they are booked in for a sleepy portrait session at Baby Buntings Photography, and while some can’t wait to get here, others are fashionably late ;)

Obviously with newborns, unless you are booked for a planned C-Section, we never really know quite when they will decide to make their appearance, for this reason my newborn diary is a very flexible and fluid place!

Because of the flexibility required I am only able to book a limited number of these sessions per month. This is so that I can absolutely guarantee you that regardless of whether baby arrives early/late I will still be able to offer you a session around your midwife/health visitor appointments, and wherever possible - Dad's paternity leave too!

At the point of booking I take a 50% retainer to secure your session.  Once your baby arrives I just ask that you pop me a quick message to let me know, and we can then confirm the best date and time for your session. If you are kept in hospital for a little longer and are not sure when you will be home and feeling up to having your session it is still worth letting me know that baby has arrived, so that I can keep enough space in my diary. If I don't hear from you I will assume that you are still (patiently!?) waiting for baby to arrive, and any very short notice slots will be offered to last minute enquiries/bookings.

Your portrait session will take place in my comfortable purpose designed studio. Newborn studios are very different to the traditional studios you might be imagining. For newborns, I keep my studio nice and warm, keeping baby's comfort a priority at all times.

I have created a cosy, warm and welcoming environment in which you can relax, feed on demand and enjoy a few refreshments whilst I capture your baby's perfect little features.

So that I can capture your baby perfectly while they are still so brand new, for most of the session your baby will be in their birthday suit. Newborn clothes never fit correctly, and often swamp even the chunkiest of newborns, so we don’t get to see all those beautiful details that say ‘hey I’m brand new!’

However, one of the downsides of this, is your baby is guaranteed to poop and/or pee on props, blankets, perhaps even me or you! This is just par for the course, something I’m used to dealing with on a daily basis and something I allow for, so please don't give it a moments thought! All of my blankets and props are washed after each session and I have plenty of cloths and towels to hand. You might want to pop a change of clothes for yourself into your changing bag, just incase the worst does happen!

Your newborn portrait session can take up to 4 hours and the reason for this is your newborn will need feeding, cuddles and cleaning throughout the session which is baby led rather than photographer led! We follow baby's pace to ensure they are happy and comfortable throughout. Please ensure you allow plenty of time for your session when arranging a date/time with me - so that you can relax, and enjoy the process of creating these precious memories, without feeling rushed.

If you are thinking about booking a newborn session, and wondering what's involved, then hopefully this blog has answered some of your questions! However if you do think of anything, or have anything you'd like to ask me then please don't hesitate to get in touch :)
