Scarlett recently travelled to me from just outside Royston for her 1st Birthday Cake Smash. I haven't photographed Scarlett before so it was great to meet her and her lovely parents, Jess & Matt.
Scarlett has such gorgeous dainty and girly features and came to her session looking like a real "girly girl" so I was completely shocked when she annihilated her cake within a few minutes! She certainly took no prisoners and had all 3 of us in stitches with her hilarious expressions and sheer determination to destroy the cake! She ate a fair amount of it too - there was no stopping this one!
Not all babies are sure what to do when they first come for a Cake Smash Session, it can be a little unnerving for them at first. Some are suspicious, are they really giving me this HUGE cake to eat all to myself? Am I really allowed to make a mess? Why are they clapping and laughing? They don't normally find it funny when I throw food on the floor!
There are a few factors that can really help to contribute to a successful cake smash session:
TIMING - Be sure to book your session at a time that suits your baby's routine. Scheduling a photoshoot right when they usually take a nap is probably not the best idea, tired babies = grumpy babies.
HUNGER - If you are booked in for a cake smash session after lunch please make sure your baby is fed but still has room for some of their yummy cake :) An overly full baby won't be interested in eating/playing with food. Equally, a baby who is starving will crave savoury food and will become overtired and grouchy.
ENCOURAGEMENT - It is really important to encourage and praise your child when they are doing well at their photo session. I can coo away at them but ultimately it is YOU your baby loves to please. Showing them they are doing well and encouraging them by clapping etc. usually brings us lots of smiles. Most babies of this age are people pleasers and love to perform once they know they are doing a fab job!
Some babies of course, take to smashing a cake up like a duck to water. Scarlett happened to be one of these babies, it soon became apparent why her Dad likes to call her the "Hulk".
